BioPet Laboratories is a biotechnology company specializing in animal genomics. BioPet offers multiple products and services: PooPrints®, the DNA solution for dog waste; BioPet Life Plan™, an interactive canine health and wellness management tool; DNA Proof of Parentage; Travel Dog™; and the DNA World Pet Registry®. As the parent company of the PooPrints® program, BioPet helps more than 7,000 multifamily properties worldwide keep their common spaces poo-free.

The challenge

BioPet faced a significant challenge as their innovative PooPrints program grew in popularity. The program, which identifies dog owners who fail to pick up after their pets by testing un-scooped dog waste, required a robust and scalable solution to manage an ever-increasing volume of data and users. With 200,000+ dogs registered annually across seven countries, the need for a reliable, user-friendly, and scalable platform became critical. The BioPet team crystallized on a vision to create their patented worldwide Dog DNA Biobank, DNA World Pet Registry® (WPR) — but they needed a tightly integrated development team to realize that vision.

The solution

BioPet Laboratories partnered with Tusk Software to develop a rearchitected and scalable DNA World Pet Registry® (WPR) from the ground up. The solution involved a custom system leveraging Microsoft Azure SQL and Oracle databases, improved processing and analysis algorithms, and a lot of .NET programming. The project team — 5–6 members including programmers, a database administrator, a graphic designer, and a project manager — worked closely with BioPet Laboratories to ensure all requirements were met.
